Boynton Canyon Trail Review

Boynton Canyon is one of the most popular hikes in Sedona. The trail is accessible, well maintained, and not strenuous. The route is very adaptable and can be modified to add distance and elevation making this a great choice for all skill levels.

I got to the trailhead around noon on a Monday, had no issues parking. Being that it was late July I did not account for the heat as I should have. The sun was beaming down hard, and it was surprisingly humid for dry heat. When planning this hike, I’d absolutely start earlier in the morning if possible.

That being said, the trail itself is very easy. The smooth sand surface is light on your legs and the grade is very gradual. Luckily about a mile in the tree cover does start to provide some shade. During this first stretch there isn’t much to see, and the scenery doesn’t pick up until you get to the Subway Cave detour.

This section is a must see despite it not being included as part of the AllTrails route. The caves are about 0.5 -1 mile in with some slight gain along the way. The caves on the second level provide a better view than the first in my opinion and I’d recommend using your energy to get to this section.

In addition to the second level caves, there is a path to get higher up the rocks to an overlook section. If attempting, be extremely careful going up and down. This section is almost exclusively steep scrambles, and the smooth rock is not great for footing.

Once you make it back to the original trail, the remaining route is tougher than the first section, but still very manageable. The terrain shifts to forest and provides a nice break from the heat.

The trail dead ends at the intersection of the canyon and provides a small overlook. The view from this part is pretty solid, but not as good as the caves in my opinion.

On our way back, lightning storms started in addition to some light rain fall. If hiking in the summertime I’d be extra careful as I later found out that this is part of monsoon season. The weather can go from being clear to thunderstorms very fast.

There are deer on this trail that are friendly and tame. Two separate occasions on the way back they came on to the trail to have a snack.

Aside from the rocky second half section of the trail, the remaining route back to the beginning is very smooth and gradual.
