Schunemunk Mountain via Western Ridge Trail Review

Schunemunk Mountain is one of the highest mountains around the NYC metro area. Having a car and a free Sunday I made the trek up to Orange County New York to try out the Western Ridge trail with some friends.

Initial reviews of this trail gave off a mixed impression on what to expect. However, the consensus seemed that this trail offers some of the best views in the Hudson Highlands and is well worth the trip.

We arrived at the trailhead around 10am and had no issues parking, there is a dirt lot within a 5/10-minute walk of the trail. Keep in mind that there are no trash cans so make sure to leave any unwanted items in your car before starting the hike.

Our group made the decision to hike the trail counterclockwise starting on the Trestle Trail. This method allows for a quick ascent up the mountain, my preference when having to pace for longer hikes.

The climb towards the top is a bit aggressive but not overwhelming. No scrambling is required on this portion as you are walking up a dirt path. There are multiple overlooks along the way including a nice shot with a bench.

Once you have ascended about 1,000 feet, you will find yourself on top of the ridge line. This path has some super cool trees and terrain.

This ridge section continues for about 1-2 mile until you turn towards the Mount Schunemunk peak. This section has a pretty significant descent of about 400 feet, be sure to also extra check trail markers as the path becomes a bit hard to follow with the turns.

After the turn is the incline approach to the top. This is a straight scramble up and was my favorite part of the whole hike. This view is also the best overlook on the trail and has a massive flat area perfect to eat lunch.

The path to the descent of the mountain is very similar to the ridge trail except with some occasional up and down scramble sections. The final trail descent for the mountain is quite long and gradual but features a waterfall stream as a highlight.

There is one last incline by the train tracks to get to the beginning of the loop. You will find yourself right back by the bridge and parking lot where you started your day.

WHO I’D RECOMMEND THIS HIKE TO
