Twin Mountain and Indian Head Mountain via Devil’s Path

I recently took my first trip up to the Catskills and was blown away. Prior to visiting my Instagram feed had been heavily populated with best of lists and destinations to see. I knew about the park’s popularity, but never really put together just how big it is.

With my trip being limited to only 2 days I wanted to make the most of it. Upon doing some research it seemed the Twin Mountain and Indian Head loop off the Devils Path was perfect.

This trail is a great choice for those looking to see a nice variety of views, but don’t have time to hike every trail. The total elevation and distance is a bit of a workout, but I’d say this is a manageable option for an intermediate half day hike. I hiked this trail on a weekday, so the overall parking/trail traffic was not too congested, but I’d assume on the weekends/holidays it is much busier.

We hiked the trail clockwise, starting with the Devil’s Path. This is the popular choice and if doing so you should expect a gradual ascent with steep decline at the end. The first 1-2 miles of the trail are very easy going with not much elevation gain and lots of tree cover. The challenge of the hike starts when the trail takes a sharp turn to go up the mountain.

The incline stays pretty consistent with about 2000 feet of elevation gain spread across 2 miles up to the peak. There is a bit of scrambling to get to the top, but nothing too intensive (hands and feet only required in a few spots).

This trail was different than most of the other peaks I’ve climbed to where there isn’t much exposed rock face. Most of the climb is still under tree cover with dirt to help your footing.

The lookout points along the way to the top are incredible. Be sure to stop at these on the way and take lots of photos, there’s plenty of ledge space and the view is unobstructed.

The Jimmy Dolan Notch overlook is a small loop detour with a nice view through some trees. It’s no big deal if you get confused or make a wrong turn at this part as there isn’t anything to see that the other look out points don’t offer.

Now a detour that is well worth it in my opinion is the Twin Mountain section. The first overlook at the summit has the best view of the whole hike and only adds a couple hundred feet of elevation over about 2 miles.

This route is an out and back section ending at a second overlook point. Both overlooks are a great place to eat lunch, but I’d say the first one has the most panoramic view.

Once getting back to the original trail, the remaining portion is a somewhat steep and consistent decline down the mountain. I’d be extra careful with footing on this portion as there are many small rocks for most of the trip down. The descent continues all the way to the beginning loop of the trail, you will now find yourself where you started.

Who I’d Recommend This Hike To
